Moving forward with experiment 6: writing buddies

Our pilot week as writing buddies went well – we have both loved the chance to talk to each other more often, and with more detail, about our writing projects. So, we will carry on! Here are the details.

The experiment

We will be each other’s writing buddy, and provide positive feedback and encouragement several times a week. This is how we’ll do it:

We started a Slack workspace for the two of us, where we each have a channel to share updates about our work. You could easily do the same via email, text message, shared documents, or any threaded discussion space.

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, Indigo shares a paragraph or two about the content of what they are working on. This share could be an actual paragraph of text, or a paragraph about how it’s going (e.g., I had a new idea about the dentist’s favorite television show), or a question, or… the guiding principle behind what to share is simply that it fills a need. Noah reads and responds in an encouraging way.

On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and one weekend day, Noah shares a paragraph, and Indigo responds.

The data

Not all aspects of our research question are researchable – in particular, it’s hard to compare the quality of ideas before and after we started being writing buddies for one another. But we can certainly find out how it feels: Does this feel onerous? Does knowing we have a writing buddy to report to make it easier to write each day? Are we excited about the writing?
